How To Relieve Engorgement - RPS By Mother

How To Relieve Engorgement - RPS By Mother Reverse Pressure Softening (RPS) technique is used to soften the nipple and areola when the mother is suffering from engorgement which is severe enough that the baby has difficulty latching on. Using a breast pump may, in fact, worsen the situation by bringing more fluid into the areola and nipple. In this video, the mother is not extremely engorged, so the benefits that may accrue from the technique are not so obvious as they usually would be. This technique is best used a minute or so before baby takes the breast. The mother, or a helper, applies pressure to the areola around the base of the nipple. It would have been better to arrange the fingers like the petals of a flower (tulip) so that there is no space between fingers. The idea is to push the interstitial fluid back into the breast and diminishes the tension and engorgement in the nipple and areola, thus allowing for baby to latch on.NOTE This video is courtesy of Newman Breastfeeding Clinic and Institute (NBCI).
